Green Hydrogen Moves From Ambition to Operation
A new integrated green-hydrogen facility at Walvis Bay moves part of Namibia’s clean-energy story from future ambition into operating industrial infrastructure.

Namibia’s green-hydrogen ambitions have moved into operating infrastructure with the inauguration of an integrated green-hydrogen plant at Walvis Bay.
WaterstofNet reported on 1 October 2025 that Cleanergy Solutions Namibia had officially launched Africa’s first integrated green-hydrogen plant. The facility was inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr Elijah Ngurare together with representatives including CMB.TECH chief executive Alexander Saverys.
The plant uses solar-powered electrolysis to produce green hydrogen onsite and incorporates a refuelling station supporting vehicle, industrial and off-grid power applications.
Initial applications include dual-fuel trucks, tractors and hydrogen-powered generator sets. An accompanying Hydrogen Academy is intended to develop Namibian skills and technical expertise in hydrogen technologies.
CMB.TECH independently confirms that the Farm 58 facility at Walvis Bay was launched in September 2025 as the first step in a broader programme to build hydrogen expertise and infrastructure in Namibia.
COUNTRY IMPACT
Namibia has positioned green hydrogen as an important potential component of its future energy and industrial economy.
Much of the country’s hydrogen opportunity remains associated with large projects that require substantial investment, infrastructure and future export markets. An operating facility provides a different and important form of evidence.
It allows hydrogen technologies, applications, skills and operating models to be deployed and tested within Namibia while connecting renewable-energy production with transport, logistics and industrial activity.
The inclusion of a Hydrogen Academy adds a human-capital dimension by developing local knowledge alongside the physical infrastructure.
Plans to extend hydrogen applications into rail and maritime activity further connect the project with Walvis Bay’s role as Namibia’s principal port and logistics hub.
The facility does not guarantee the success of Namibia’s larger proposed hydrogen projects. It does, however, demonstrate that part of the country’s emerging hydrogen economy has moved from strategy and development planning into physical operation.
RELEVANCE TO SUNGATE
The Walvis Bay facility has no direct operational connection to Sungate.
Its relevance lies in the broader transformation of Namibia’s infrastructure and industrial economy.
New industries create requirements extending beyond the location at which production takes place. They bring specialist businesses, technical expertise, equipment, logistics, training, professional services and investment into the wider economy.
Sungate’s position adjacent to Hosea Kutako International Airport places it within the commercial environment through which international expertise, businesses and investment enter Namibia.
Its mixed-use structure also provides flexibility to respond over time as the country’s commercial and industrial requirements evolve.
For Sungate, the significance is therefore not green hydrogen alone. It is further evidence that Namibia is beginning to convert emerging-industry ambitions into operating infrastructure and economic activity.
