The Freeway That Changed the Airport Corridor
The completion of the Dr Hage G. Geingob Freeway materially strengthened connectivity between Windhoek and Hosea Kutako International Airport, transforming the accessibility of Namibia’s principal airport corridor.

On 10 November 2025, Namibia officially inaugurated the completed Dr Hage G. Geingob Freeway, creating a dual-carriageway connection between Windhoek and Hosea Kutako International Airport.
New Era reported that the completed project spans approximately 47.5 kilometres and was delivered at a total cost of N$3.5 billion.
Speaking on behalf of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at the inauguration, Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi described the freeway as a vital corridor linking Windhoek to Namibia’s main international gateway, Hosea Kutako International Airport, while also improving access to strategic hubs such as Walvis Bay Port.
The Minister placed the freeway within Namibia’s regional trunk-routes development programme and linked the investment to inter-regional trade and the country’s position as a gateway for imports and exports to and from neighbouring markets.
The opening therefore represents more than the completion of a road project. It materially strengthens the transport corridor connecting Namibia’s capital with its principal international airport and wider regional trade network.

The completed freeway strengthens the physical connection between Windhoek and Hosea Kutako International Airport while improving the quality and capacity of one of Namibia’s most strategically important transport corridors.
Its relevance extends across tourism, business travel, logistics, trade and investment. The airport connects Namibia to international markets, while the road network links that gateway to Windhoek and onward national and regional routes.
By completing the dual-carriageway connection to the airport, Namibia has invested in infrastructure that supports both international connectivity and the movement of economic activity through the wider corridor.
The significance is structural and long term: the freeway changes the accessibility of the airport environment and strengthens the infrastructure platform around Namibia’s principal international gateway.
RELEVANCE TO SUNGATE
For Sungate, the opening of the Dr Hage G. Geingob Freeway is a defining infrastructure milestone.
Sungate is a 408-hectare mixed-use development adjacent to Hosea Kutako International Airport. The completed freeway materially strengthens road connectivity between Windhoek, the airport and the corridor within which Sungate is located.
The freeway was not developed specifically for Sungate, and the national infrastructure project should not be presented as a Sungate project. Its relevance lies in the change it creates in the surrounding economic geography.
Airport-adjacent land becomes more commercially relevant when the international gateway it surrounds is efficiently connected to the principal urban market it serves. Improved accessibility supports the movement of travellers, employees, businesses, services and investment through the corridor.
For Sungate, the 10 November 2025 opening therefore represents more than the completion of a major road. It marks a structural improvement in the accessibility of its location and strengthens the long-term airport-economy proposition on which the development is positioned.
