Karibib–Usakos Road Upgrade Opens Strengthened Logistics Link

SOURCE SIGNAL

The rehabilitation and upgrading of the 31.2-kilometre section of Trunk Road 7/1 between Karibib and Usakos has been completed and officially opened.

The upgraded road now incorporates a 2+1 carriageway, dedicated overtaking lanes, wider shoulders and new surfacing. The work also included parking bays in Karibib and a new roundabout in Usakos.

The total contract value was N$498.6 million. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, through KfW Development Bank, provided an interest-reduced loan of N$372.6 million with a ten-year repayment period.

More than 500 people were employed during the project, with women representing approximately 25% of the workforce. Namibian partner contractors received an estimated 25% share of the main contract, while cement, steel, fuel, aggregates, interlocks and other materials were procured locally.

The main road section is open, although work is continuing on a bridge connecting the hospital in Usakos. The milestone should therefore be described as the opening of the upgraded strategic road section rather than completion of every related ancillary work.

COUNTRY IMPACT

The Karibib–Usakos road forms part of the transport network connecting the Port of Walvis Bay with Namibia’s interior and neighbouring SADC countries.

The wider carriageway, dedicated overtaking opportunities and improved shoulders can strengthen road safety, reduce congestion and improve the predictability of passenger and freight movement along the corridor.

Its significance extends beyond the 31.2-kilometre section itself. Namibia’s logistics proposition depends on reliable connections between the port, inland commercial centres and regional markets.

The project also converted infrastructure expenditure into local employment, subcontracting and procurement during construction. Its longer-term economic value will depend on maintenance and the extent to which the improved route supports growing trade and freight volumes.

RELEVANCE TO SUNGATE

The Karibib–Usakos road is not located at SUNGATE and does not create a direct requirement for land at the development.

Its relevance lies in Namibia’s wider transport and logistics network.

SUNGATE is a 408-hectare master-planned mixed-use development adjacent to Hosea Kutako International Airport and positioned at the convergence of air, road and rail. Its long-term development proposition depends partly on the strength of the national infrastructure connecting Windhoek and the airport corridor with Walvis Bay, Namibia’s production regions and neighbouring markets.

The completed upgrade provides further evidence that Namibia is investing in the physical corridors required to support regional trade, logistics, commercial services and industrial activity.

For SUNGATE, this is therefore an enabling-infrastructure signal rather than evidence of a site-specific commitment or immediate demand.
